In the summer of 2023, an idea was conceptualized to honor those who have paved the way for hockey in Houston. 2023 also marked the 50th anniversary of the first major league hockey championship for the city of Houston. When the founders of the Houston Hockey Hall of Fame learned of the 50th reunion being planned in Houston for the World Hockey Association’s Houston Aeros Avco World Trophy champion teams, it was an obvious choice to move forward and finalize the idea with the inaugural class being the Avco World Trophy champion teams from 1973-1974 and 1974-1975.
Professional hockey in Houston has left its mark on the community. When professional hockey lives in Houston, the team is beloved in the community, and when it goes, it is greatly missed. Many Hockey Hall of Famers have called Houston home at one point in their career. For those who have played and called Houston home, the one thing that resonates is that Houston is a Hockey Town.
Amateur hockey has always remained strong from youth to adult levels. The passion and time given back by many individuals has created opportunities for the youth the develop, and for adults, especially how transient Houston has become, the opportunity to meet new friends through a game they love has become a staple in the community.
Through the Houston Hockey Community, the Houston Hockey Hall of Fame will carry on the legacy of those who became pioneers to grow the game of hockey in Houston. A virtual hall of fame will live on this site and will be the source of information. The Aerodrome will serve as the in-person Hall of Fame experience, where guests will be able to browse Houston hockey memorabilia and honor those who have given back to this great game.
As we move forward in future years, an annual event will not only induct new members of the Houston Hockey Hall of Fame but also provide fundraising opportunities to give back to the game!
